Jorge Coelho, former Bar Manager of The Market Restaurant and current Bar Consultant and Bar Builder for Empor Spirits has been creating a buzz in Faro Portugal because of his impressive and highly skillful bartending show techniques. He believes that bartending inspiration can come anywhere. His advice to young professinals, “Try to be better today than you were yesterday…”
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself. When and why did you decide to work as a bartender and what do you love most about your job?
Hello I am Jorge Coelho. I am curious person who loves to travel and learn about different cultures and costumes. I have decided to work as a bartender out in a bar called “Wild & Company”. The awesomeness that I have experienced because of the bartenders in this particular bar made me quit my day job and start my journey as a bartender. What I love the most in this job is that we never stop craving for knowledge. There are so many different areas that we need to master – to become better professionals which is a constant and huge challenge.
2. What was your funniest moment as a bartender?
It was 2005 and I just started practicing flair bartending so it was normal to see me throw a bottle from right hand to the back on my left hand…It is a move that 98% of the attempts I would land it.
So the scenario is inside a Karaoke bar and the manager announce me to sing a song in the bar speaker system and in that exact moment I fail to grab a bottle to my left hand on the back… So the sound of the crash was heard by everybody in the bar… (There were no floor mats at this time) It was a huge overall laughter and I can say it was really embarrassment but also very funny moment.
3. What is your favourite drink and why? What is your last creation?
My favorite drink is gin. In a cocktail or just with nice tonic I love it.
My last cocktail called “Higge Martini” that I have taken to IBA WCC 2017 and reached third position in overall.

- 2cl De Kuyper Sour Rhubarb
- 2cl Ponthier Fruit Purée Willamette Raspberry
- 1cl Giffard Gum Syrup
- 3cl Lime Juice (fresh)
- 5gr Pennyroyal
4. What is the best bar you have ever been and why?
I can´t really say which bar was the best. In my defense I still have to visit so many bars all over the world. Some bars I consider the best but I didn´t had the chance to visit them so far, and those I have visited give me the best experience they could, so I do not want to be unfair to any saying “this bar is better than that bar…” Sorry 😊
5. Where do you get your inspirations from? Is there a person and why?
Inspirations can come from anywhere. I do not have a place where I go and load myself with inspiration… It just happens.
6. What is your advice for someone who wants to work as a bartender?
I would only advice one to work as a bartender if you love the job. If you love it go for it, it is a very interesting career… As I have said before, you always have something new to learn. My advice is: “Try to be better today than you were yesterday…”
7. Whiskey or Gin?
Gin but I also love a good Bourbon.
